Clarke's Three laws

British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008) coined three laws dealing with prediction: two from his 1962 essay "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination" and a third from his 1973 essay "Profiles of the Future." The third law is perhaps the most widely quoted.

Arthur C. Clarke formulated the following three “laws” of prediction:

1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

The Jeremy Lin Story

Early this week, NBA crazy folks stumbled upon an unlikely and unknown basketball virtuoso. The unfolding of his brilliancy in the court comes after the New York Knicks coach run out of option and so he pulled his last wild card in the person of Jeremy Lin. The undrafted player with a Harvard degree becomes an overnight sensation that sweep across the  basketball crazy nations in a span of 5 games - all wins. The highlight of his amazing dazzling display of basketball talents were showcase against the LA Lakers whom the Knicks haven't beaten since February 2007. The result Lin single-handedly burned the Lakers by scoring 38 career high points.

A Robot That Generates Electricity

I have been thinking about this idea for some time now. While visiting a park and watching my kids rides the swing and as I observed, power is generated and accelerated by the ride (very obvious :) - swinging back and forth) provided that the person who rides it, pushed and jerks his feet upon reaching the crescendo on the back swing.

I tried it myself and I can swing faster without touching the ground, without external force or interference only by the timely and synchronized movement of my feet.

I wonder if a robot can simulate this swing formula. Let's say 10+ robots in parallel succession, I believed it can generate enough power to light a modern house. Thus saves fuel, most of all it's green and eco friendly.

A wild but interesting idea I guess.
